Southern Vermont College Introduces The Good Neighbor Scholarship for Students in Area Communities

November 4, 2015

Southern Vermont College (SVC) is excited to announce a new scholarship opportunity available to qualified students from neighboring communities, a savings that will bring tuition for the small, private, career-launching liberal arts college closer in line with state institutions. The Good Neighbor Scholarship is a renewable scholarship of $11,000 per year for students who meet SVC’s admissions standards and have attended high schools in Bennington and Windham Counties in Vermont or selected areas in adjacent states, or who meet certain other criteria.

“Southern Vermont College is a vital part of the Bennington community and it’s important that we be good neighbors to prospective students and their families in the area, by making college more affordable and accessible for them,” said SVC President David Rees Evans. “We’re proud to be the alma mater for many hardworking alumni who have chosen to stay in the surrounding area, alums who are on the police force, are the nurses and radiologic technicians at the hospital and doctor’s offices, and local business owners; this is a way of honoring them and expressing our gratitude to the community that has supported the College. Higher education can be a cooperative local effort, and we want to highlight our strong relationship with Bennington and the surrounding area and help students from here find a place at SVC.”

The Good Neighbor Scholarship offers a substantial savings to SVC tuition, tuition that is already a significantly better value than most private colleges in New England.

Individuals who meet one or more of the following criteria are eligible to apply for the scholarship:
-    Students who are permanent residents (for at least two years) of Bennington and Windham counties in Vermont;
-    Individuals who are enrolled or have recently graduated (within two years) from the following high schools: any public or private high school in Bennington or Windham counties; The Hoosac School, NY; Hoosick Falls Central School, NY; Cambridge Central School, NY; Berlin Central School, NY; Mount Greylock Regional High School, MA; Drury High School, MA; and Charles H. McCann Technical High School, MA;
-    Students who currently attend or have within two years graduated or completed 30 hours from Community College of Vermont; or
-    Students who have earned an associate’s degree from Landmark College.

The Good Neighbor Scholarship is now being offered for the upcoming academic year, 2016-2017. With all criteria pertaining to attending a specific school, official transcripts must be received by SVC before awarding the Good Neighbor Scholarship. All decisions on eligibility are made by the Admissions committee.  Students will be required to reapply for the scholarship annually through the Development Office’s “Named Scholarship” application.
